AWARD FOR PRIVATELY-OWNED PUBLIC-USE: GENESEO GEN-AIRPARK
Gen-Airpark in Geneseo was started in 1979 by Clyde Johnson and a group of aviation enthusiasts as a land lease. Since that time Gen-Air Inc, a group of 50 or so shareholders has purchased the land, expanded and turned Gen-Airpark into a vibrant hub of general aviation activity.
Gen-Airpark on a busy weekend fills the skies east of the Quad Cities with a variety of interesting airplanes, helicopters, gliders and skydivers. Gen-Airpark is the home base of Quad City Skydiving Center and is widely known for their famous Fathers Day breakfasts supported by pilots and the public. Gen-Airpark has supported the EAA Young Eagles program introducing many young people to flight and each September Gen-Airpark hosts the national Stearman Aerobatic contest in conjunction with the Galesburg National Stearman Convention.
The airport is meticulously maintained by volunteers dedicated to keeping a public-use airport open for Geneseo with no local, state or federal funding. Each late winter and spring on the 3rd Thursday of the month, aviation films are shown at a movie theater in Geneseo as a fund raiser for the airport and a means of educating the public on the airport and it's value to the community.
